The increasing number of caesareans causes serious health problems. This can be prevented by optimized prenatal care, which gives first-time mothers positive experiences in giving birth. A new Master of Public Health thesis at the Nordic School of Public Health NHV shows this.
Midwife Lise Gaudernack have studied the increasing number of caesareans. Her study shows that this is associated with increased health problems, both at individual and population level.
according to her study, one possible reason for the increasing number of caesareans could be that the second time mothers requesting a caesarean have experienced more complications and surgical procedures at their first childbirth, than the general population.
– It is therefore of outmost importance to prevent traumatic birth experiences. This can be done by optimizing the support mothers receive, since such trauma leads to the desire for a caesarean, says Lise Gaudernack.
The Norwegian “Known midwife project" has helped women with anxiety for giving birth to still choose a vaginal birth.
