Emmanuelle Charpentier, professor at Umeå University, has been selected by Time magazine as one of its 100 most influential people in the world list for 2015. She was recognised for her discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 mechanism in bacteria, which became a gene editing tool now used in research labs world wide.

[PRESS RELEASE 2013-10-01] The COUNTERSTROKE consortium, led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, today initiates a six million Euro EU funded collaboration to develop novel therapeutics to treat stroke.

It’s true that the brain governs the body, but the body also governs the brain, for example when the immune defense system makes us rest when we’re sick. This is shown in research that the world’s leading researchers and Nobel laureates will be presenting at an international conference in the research field of psychoneuroimmunology in Stockholm in June. This is research that, among other things, has led to new knowledge about the development of depression, severe stress accelerating aging, and how anti-depressive drugs largely function as placebos.

The European Commission has officially announced the selection of the Human Brain Project (HBP) as one of its two FET Flagship projects. The new project will federate European efforts to address one of the greatest challenges of modern science: understanding the human brain.

From more than 10.000 valid entries submitted by design students from all over the world, only 100 projects received an iF concept award 2012. Two of these were awarded to Masters students at Umeå Institute of Design: Simon Fredriksson and Gosha Galitsky, Dogan Sekercioglu, all students at the Master’s programme in Advanced Product Design, and Carol Tang from UID’s Interaction Design programme.

An internationally leading scientist in the field of Molecular Biology, Dr. Randall S Johnson, has been appointed Professor at the medical university Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. In his new capacity as Professor in Molecular Biology and the Biology of Hypoxia at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Dr. Johnson will develop existing collaborations with top researchers at Karolinska Institutet.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have received an additional 1.4 million Euro from business magnate Fredrik Lundberg for research into bicuspid aortic valve and its links to aneurysm.
