IFAU – Institute for Labour Market Policy Evaluation

The Institute for Evaluation of Labour Market and Education Policy (IFAU) is a research institute under the Swedish Ministry of Employment, situated in Uppsala. IFAU’s objective is to promote, support and carry out scientific evaluations.

The assignment includes:

the effects of labour market policies
studies of the functioning of the labour market
the effects of education policies
the labour market effects of social insurance policies.

Besides research, IFAU is:

disseminating knowledge of the activities of the insitute through publications, seminars, courses, workshops, conferences and the IFAU website
influencing the collection of data and making data easily available to researchers, both in Sweden and abroad.

More private schools improves all students’ outcomes

The growing proportion of compulsory school students attending private schools has led to higher test scores and grades in 9th grade. This applies to students at both private schools and public schools. The effects persist in upper secondary school and higher education. This is shown in a new report.

Smaller school classes leads to better student outcomes and higher wages

Students who were in a small class in grades 4 to 6 had better school achievement and higher wages as adults than those who were in large classes. This is shown in research done at IFAU, the Institute for Evaluation of Labor Market and Education Policy, in Sweden. Smaller classes are also found to be profitable to society.

Mom works less – Dad works more

In connection with the birth of the first child, the working life of women is affected considerably more than that of men. Women stop doing long commutes, work shorter hours, and change jobs more seldom than comparable women without children. Men, on the other hand, are not affected to any great extent by parenthood. This is shown in a new study from IFAU, the Institute for Labor Market Policy Evaluation in Sweden.

Employers reject the unemployed

Swedish employers seem to view being unemployed as a negative trait. A new study from IFAU (Institute for Labor Market Policy Evaluation) shows that companies prefer to contact applicants who have jobs rather than those who are unemployed, even t though the individuals are identical in all other respects. This aggravates the situation of the unemployed when it comes to finding work.
