As a part of the Swedish EU-presidency, the Swedish Government will host a conference on the future of European research; New Worlds – New Solutions â Research and Innovation as a Basis for Developing Europe in a Global Context. The Conference will take place in Lund, Sweden, on 7-8 July 2009 (at Lund University), and will be opened by the Minister for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Tobias Krantz, and the European Commissioner for Science and Research, Dr. Janez Potocnik. The overall theme of the Conference is the role of research and innovation in the development of Europe up to 2025. We expect around 400 participants.

When European countries get together to prioritize what infrastructures are needed for future research, the Swedish radar facility EISCAT will be on the table among 7 new projects. On December 9, the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures, ESFRI, published its updated roadmap to what infrastructure investments are deemed to be of the greatest importance in coming years. The list comprises 44 projects, and the recommendations cover all fields of research.

The international conference âBridges to the futureâ in Sweden and Denmark this summer will tackle as different issues as the âmedializationâ of science and the lack of journalism training opportunities in developing countries. At the conference, science communicators, researchers, science writers, press officers, and librarians from all over the world will meet and take part in a playful but serious discussion about how to develop science communication.

In a new report, the Swedish Research Council reviews how research funding for universities and university colleges has developed since the mid 1990s. The report shows that their resources increased up to 2002 and then stagnated.
During the ten-year period, universities and university colleges increased their numbers of undergraduates, admitted more doctoral students, hired more people, and faced higher salary costs. One consequence is insufficient or non-existent investment in infrastructure.
