The researchers have been chosen by the InterAcademy Panel (IAP), a global network of the world’s science academies which was set up in 1993. Besides Johan Åkerman, Sweden will be represented by Tünde Fülöp from Chalmers University of Technology, having been nominated by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Around 1,500 delegates will be gathering to discuss this year’s theme of Driving Growth through Sustainability. The programme will be focusing on how we can increase energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, develop green technology and build basic infrastructure.

Åkerman’s research focuses on spintronic oscillators, which use electrons’ magnetic force to generate a radio frequency signal – a technology that is expected to be a breakthrough for the high-speed, wireless home electronics of the future.

Ă…kerman will be blogging directly from the conference in Tianjin on 13-15 September for the Swedish popular science journal Forskning och Framsteg: www.fof.se/blogg.
