“With his long commitment to global issues, Jan Eliasson is a worthy holder of the professorship. Through his work, he has strived for peace, development and human rights. Untiringly, and always involved in his work, he has contributed to making Sweden’s role in the world one that is dominted by humanity and co-operation. We are extremely pleased that he has accepted our offer” says Pam Fredman.

Jan Eliasson has had a long, successful diplomatic career. Among other things, he has been Sweden’s Foreign Minister, Chairperson of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Sweden’s ambassador in Washington and to the United Nations. He has also had extensive and varying international assignments as mediator such as in the Iran-Iraq war and in the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He has also led humanitarian aid in Somalia, Sudan, Mozambique and in the Balkans.

In 2001, Jan Eliasson received an honorary degree from the University of Gothenburg. He has also graduated from the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg.

Jan Eliasson is Guest Professor from 1 September 2008 to 31 august 2009.
